Description & Process

Measurements for Contact Lenses

Using a keratometer or corneal topographer, the optometrist measures the curvature of your cornea to ensure a proper lens fit. Measurements of pupil and iris size help select the appropriate lens size, while a tear film evaluation assesses the quality and quantity of your tear film to determine if you have dry eyes, which can affect lens comfort and suitability.

Contact Lens Selection

Based on your vision correction needs and lifestyle, the optometrist will recommend the most suitable type of contact lenses, such as daily disposables, extended wear, toric lenses for astigmatism, or multifocal lenses for presbyopia. Different materials are suited for various needs, including soft lenses, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, and hybrid lenses.

Trial Lenses and Fitting

The optometrist will provide trial lenses and teach you how to properly insert and remove them. After inserting the trial lenses, they will examine the fit on your eyes to ensure they are comfortable and provide clear vision. Your vision will be tested again with the trial lenses to confirm they provide the correct correction.

Instructions and Education

You’ll receive detailed instructions on how to clean, store, and handle your contact lenses safely to prevent infections and ensure comfort. Guidance will be provided on how long to wear your lenses each day, including any necessary adjustment period for new users. Additionally, you’ll get advice on what to do if you experience discomfort, dryness, or other common issues with contact lenses.

Follow-Up Appointments

A follow-up visit is usually scheduled within a week or two to check the fit and comfort of the lenses and address any issues you may have encountered. Regular check-ups are recommended to monitor your eye health and ensure the continued suitability of your contact lenses, with the frequency of these visits varying based on individual needs and lens type.
